There are games that seem important, wins that send you
soaring, losses that seem crushing. Hockey provides us all
with incredible memories and, if we pay close enough
attention, crucial life lessons. Speaking on behalf of
Mission management, I can say without fear of contradiction
that far more often than not, our players, coaches and
parents continually impress us with their dedication, and
make us proud to be a part of an organization that has
accomplished an awful lot on the ice.
But on Friday, January 2, our Midget Major team under the
guidance and mentorship of head coach Pete Rutili took it a
step further. After a brisk morning practice followed by a
team meal, Coach Rutili took his squad to spend time at the
Misericordia Home on the northwest side of Chicago. There,
the players spent two hours guiding the kids and young
adults who were born with profound mental challenges in the
ways of floor hockey. The Majors donated a set of brand new
floor hockey equipment to the institution, and it is safe to
say that our players got at least as much out of the time
spent with their students as the students did themselves.
"It was amazing watching our kids step up and interact in
such a positive way," said Coach Rutili. "I've never been
prouder of a group of young men."
Well, the same goes for you, Coach. Thanks to your efforts
and those of your team, we've never been prouder of being a
part of the Chicago Mission.
